Is Windows reinstallation necessary?

So, when I went over my girlfriends house today, her sister came running up to me telling me her computer "got a cold or a viruses or something and now it doesn't want to work for me." So, I booted it up. It got to the Windows loading screen and was loading fine. After that screen (just when it's about to take you to the desktop) it takes me to a completely black screen with just the mouse cursor in the middle.... and that's where it stays.

She said that "all she did" was go on facebook the night before. She said when she turned the computer on the next morning all it did was this. She did also mention that she was flooded with pop ups while trying to chat on facebook.

So, questions are; Does she have a virus? If so, will reinstalling windows on a reformated partition get rid of it? Or, if she doesn't have a virus, what might be the problem?

Thanks in advanced! Much appreciation.

Yes that's most likely a virus, reinstalling windows should fix everything, but make sure to back up the data!
haha and i had the same problem recently, so really all you need to do is reinstall
what i did was changed the drive, i had that problem with an old IDE HDD and i put in a SATA and had no problem
is it running vista? and do you know if it's an IDE or SATA drive?
o, also, how old is the computer?

Thanks for the reply. The computer is roughly 9 years old. It's a Dell Dimension 8200 (It SUCKS my browneye). I think I've reinstalled Windows about 4 times already. It has and IDE drive with Windows XP on it. She doesn't want Vista. Also, I'm going to put a free version of NOD32 on it, until she purchases it. Thanks again

Sounds like a virus has prevented explorer.exe from loading. Try ctrl+alt+del while it's on the black screen, hit 'File' up at the top, then 'New Task (Run)', then type in: explorer.exe and hit OK. See if it'll then load the desktop. ...There's always booting into safe mode and trying things out, too.

Your virus may be M$ Windows. If her version was pirated and not activated (or cracked) then MS would take you to a black screen with a very limited use of the PC. Check into that before you wipe it.
