need help choosing hdd setup

looking to get a raid setup to help increase performance, and was wondering what was in your opinion the best combination of price/performance. As far as I know, SSD's are not really worth the investment at this point of time so they are out of the picture. Also, I'm a bit wary of grabbing a single raptor (but I will if you can convince me!) due to the fact that it seems that raiding two 1tb samsung spinpoints would provide almost the same performance, for far more storage and far less cost.

Already have a 320gb wd, AAKS variety, 80gb Seagate

Considering the following purchasing options, ranked in terms of price:

#1: $55 ($82 AUD) - Second 320gb WD (same model) in raid 0, 80gb as backup for important files that I don't want to risk losing
#2: $121 ($181 AUD) - Second 320gb WD as per above, 640gb AAKS wd to mirror data
#3: $134 ($200 AUD) - Two 640gb AAKS WD's AAKS, raid 0, 320gb as backup
#4: $225 ($338 AUD) - Two 1TB samsung spinpoints, raid 0, 320gb as backup
#5: $314 ($470 AUD) - 300gb WD VelociRaptor

Can't really justify raiding a second Veloicraptor, even though I know that would provide the best performance of all.

Performance is priority, but extra hard-disk space is always nice and cannot be completely ignored. I probably could not see myself using 2tb of data should I pick up the samsungs, as I already have a network to store data on. However, I heard they are excellent performers, so if the cost justifies it I would pick them up for that. However, I'm not really sure that they would perform much faster than the two 640gb or even 320gb wd's in raid 0. Is it worth the extra $175?

Any advice is appreciated!

One Velociraptor will give you the same performance of 2 Raptors in Raid-0. I would go with the single VR. Reason being, if one hd in raid 0 goes, you loose it all, and this way your odds are 50% better that you will not drop a drive. Or wait a bit and SSD's will be 50% less by February/March. Good Luck!

That is a major appeal of grabbing a single drive, and I was considering it I'm just wondering however, how well would two 320 wd's perform to the velociraptor? If it beats two raptors in raid-0, I'm going to guess by a hefty margin. Reason is that if the difference is not too large, I might just grab one 320gb + 640gb and mirror the raid. Thanks for the feedback btw! Starting to seriously consider the velociraptor
