Cannot OC e7300 past 3.0Ghz?

Thread Starter
At 3 Ghz, system is rock solid with 24 hrs of small FFT P95 torture test under its belt and 6 hours of Large FFT torture test as well. Considering that I am coming from an AMD 3800X2, the x2 performance has pretty much blown me away already.

For the life of me I cannot get my system stable (or even boot past the splash screen) past 3.0 Ghz and its getting under my skin, especially seeing how many nice 3.5-3.8 OCs there are here. If the kind folks at OC.net could please take a look at my settings and dig into that well of experience to find a solution to my woes it would be greatly appreciated.

I want to get to a paltry 333mhz FSB and a 10x multi for a 3.33 Ghz OC if possible, that's my goal.

My system is in my sig, and the Bios settings on my Gigabyte GA -EP43-DS3L are as follows:

In the Advanced Bios Features Tab:
CPU Enhanced Halt: Disabled
C2/C2E State Support: Disabled
C4/C4E State Support: Greyed Out/Disabled

If you need any more information do ask. I have already set my Vcore to 1.3625V and tried to work bacwards but it simply doesn't seem to like an FSB higher than 300 (even 310 is somewhat unstable).

Is your RAM voltage 1.8 or 2.1? I'm confused.

welcome to the forum.
first i want to say, have you tried pumping a little more vcore into the processor or the memory? another thing is, there is usually something that prevents the chip from overclocking too far. for AMD it's called cool n' quiet, but i'm not sure what the option is for intel.

-Its 2.1, 1.8 is the VID for the ram, but it doesn't run at 1066 at such a low voltage.

-Thanks. I actually set the Vcore at 1.3625, the highest this proc is rated for, and started clocking up from there, I also increased the MCH from 1.1 (paltry) to 1.3 and the CPU termination up to 1.3 just so i could have some breathing room. When I hit the ceiling at 3 GHZ Prime stable, I turned the Vcore down to the lowest it could go while remaining stable.

Additionally, the Ram is running at 900 Mhz right now while its rated (and was stable) @ 1066 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1v, so I'm hesitant to up the ram volts if it could run faster with the same voltage. However, I think it could do with 2.2v, but thats 100mv above the rated spec that it really shouldn't need at all.

Flowtek: I'll try those settings right away, although I'm interested to know WHY those settings? Did you run into the same problem or just a hunch? Thanks again I'll get back to ya.

[Edit: Flowtek: Alright, I tried your settings and still the same thing. Computer shuts down after saving bios then restarts for a few seconds, then reboots itself before the spashscreen can even come up.]

i just thought thos were best possible settings for your VID, that is 1.2250 if i'm not mistaken , well, every chip may vary, i can run up to 4G stable without touching anything except vcore and MCH, but i had this serious issue with MCH Frequancy Latch, diffreret oc had to be with different strap, like when i oc to 3.2 (8x400) had to be 400, cannot get stable with 266, 200 or 333, dont know why and at 4ghz (9x445) cannot even get stable with 400 or 266, had to be 333 strap.. those were tested with blend and smallfft.. finally figured out after a month tweaking ... other than that, i have no issue regarding cpu stability or RAM

happy tweaking

Alright, I finally narrowed down on the problem and got my 7300 to clock past 3.0 ghz, and although this is some serious thread necro, I'm posting just in case someone else runs into the same problem:

After removing my two old ATA DVD rom drives my system became PATA free and is now entirely SATA based. The overclocking ceiling disappeared.

One of two things might have happened. I have read that certain mobo's fail to post if they think that there is too much voltage variability in the components attached to them, and that the solution to this problem is to remove some devices. Going from 2 PATA drives to 1 SATA drive potentially solved this problem and allowed me to overclock.

However, I also think the ancient IDE host controller was getting cranked up as the CPU host freq was being cranked up, and much like PCI or PCI-E, it was OK with the overclocking up to a FSB of 300, but even 1 mhz over and it would fail badly. Just a theory, but seeing how both devices were IDE and powered separately from the motherboard (unlike a USB device, for example) I think this is a much more valid explanation.

Anyhow, if you have a gigabyte board and it fails to OC past a certain point, see if removing any IDE devices does the trick. However, now that I have a nice stable overclock, I'm not going to go back and throw IDE drives back into my computer to see if it was really the problem due to time constraints, although I would like to.

Hope this helps anyone else that may run into the same issue.

My E7300 was capped at 3.06GHz until I realized the thermal paste from my heat sink wasn't applied correctly.

Simple solution was to push my heat sink down and wiggle it around. My temps dropped a good 40C after that.

Got it running stable at 71C/3.33GHz now :-)

Maybe that'll help you too? /shrug

Also, a question: Why are you running your RAM at 2.1V? I have the exact same RAM and I know it says it will work from 2.0~2.1V.. but it also seems VERY flexible, I can run it just fine at 1.8V/1111MHz.

Edit: If you need any other info just let me know.. we have almost the exact same computer, haha.
