4870 problem, new build

Thread Starter
Just put together my new system. The specs are below. The computer turns on, and all the LEDs light up and the fans turn on, but i don't get any picture. The monitor will turn on, but i don't get any signal. The only thing i get is 3 red LEDs on the video card flashing. The HDD light on the case also blinks, but all the connections seem to be hooked up properly. Anyone have any ideas?

Fill out your system specs here .

Edit: Do you hear any beeps or anything? I would also try re-seating your memory sticks as well as your video card sometimes those things don't quite get pushed all the way down into their slots.

First, make sure there are no loose wires inside the case going to the MOBO, graphics cards, etc...

If you can go into your Bios, I would go back to default settings, terminating any overclocks.

If that does not work, and you can still get into Bios, then insert your OS CD, then go into Bios and change settings to boot-up from your OS CD. You'll have a few options, chose the option to repair your OS. Sometimes when you blue screen/fail to post, you damage boot sectors and other things in your OS. Let it do it's thing and hopefully, that should get you back into Windows. By chosing to repair the OS, you won't suffer any file loses.

If that does not work, and you can't post, and you want to be thorought then;

01. Shut down system and turn off PSU.
02. Press power button to discharge mobo
03. Jumper Clear CMOS jumper
04. Remove battery
05. Remove all memory
06. Let sit for 15-20min
07. Place 1 stick of mem in system in slot farthest from the CPU.
08. Replace Clear CMOS jumper.
09. Replace battery
10. Turn on PSU
11. Press power button. (if still getting "--" or 1d then "--" then shut down and reboot again. If still same then RMA)
12. If boot occurs (ie FF Led) then enter bios.
13. Load defaults, set date/time, set mem voltage to factory settings
14. F10 save and reboot.
15. If boot occurs then enter bios, make all changes needed
16. F10 save and reboot.
17. If boot occurs (ie FF) then enter bios then shut system down via power switch
18. Place second stick of mem in second slot farthest from CPU.
19. Power on.
20. If boot occurs (ie FF) then hit reset to make sure.
21. If boot occurs then move on to allow windows to boot.

A quicker version from the one provided on top, would be to;

01. Shut down system and turn off PSU.
02. Remove battery
03. Press power button to discharge mobo (5 seconds minum)
04. Replace battery
05. Plug psu in and boot

As far as I know looking at this board it doesn't have onboard capabilities and the OP specifically stated he cannot see any picture on his screen and the computer merely turns on so I highly doubt he can get into his bios.

Edit: I know this a stupid question but do you have both pcie cables plugged into the card?

So, i checked all my connections, and yes, i had both 6-pins plugged in. I reseated the RAM, and still no go. I couldn't even get to the bios, so obviously i couldn't make any changes there. Tried pulling one of the ram chips, and trying it in different slots. Turns out, i have a bad chip. With one of the chips, it will boot to bios, with the other, i get nothing and those 3 LEDs on the video cards just blink. So, not a video card problem, but i still have to wait for an RMA from newegg. Oh well, i'll try again next week. Thanks for all your help.

Glad you got the problem sorted it really sucks when you have no idea what the problem is and the pc just won't boot. Good thing is Newegg should be super quick about it and at least that's all it was.

Well i'm getting the SAME problem... but with a slight twist.

I was getting the Flashing red led's so i tried the suggestion and after i moved just one stick of ram to the outer slot (#4) the leds stopped flashing. But Still no signal from video. Tried the other stick of ram and same thing.

Guess i'll go over to a friends and see if his memory works and if my card works in his system.

One other thing though... when i power up... my keyboard flashes all three green led's but then they all go out. I was under the assumption that the num lock will usually stay on, and i cannot get it to light up by pressing numlock. Also my usb mouse briefly lights up but then goes right out. Almost as if the usb power is not working... though it did stay lit ONE and only one time.
