I used to do it all the time, reisntall windows, and my HP felt like a new computer. I just have to take care of my rig extra super carefully, because there is not recovery option.

Don't do the repair recovery, it doesn't do anything but reinstall drivers.

Destructive is the way to go!
I'll definitely check it out, didn't even think about it.

Yeah he's pretty awesome. Usually I just use him as a paper weight though

I know this is late BUT...

Right Click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Primay IDE Channel > Right click (Uninstall) > Reboot

The laptop goes into a PIO Mode which slows it down HORRENDOUSLY and is very annoying. This usually happens when the machine is shut down improperly.

*Edit* This is as a future reference I guess since you went ahead with a unnecessary re-install of Windows. Just keep this in mind in case this happens again.

You could try tweaking the OS.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, but my sis got the laptop probably like 2 years ago. I asked her if she 1. ran a virus scan, 2. cleaned out her drives, and 3. defragmented. Her 3 answers were 1. nope, 2. how, 3. what?

Could still be the issue, just because you never do any of the following doesn't mean you WILL have it on there.

Majority of all Anti Virus programs have an auto update and a scheduled virus scan that runs pretty frequently.

De fragmentation is another thing that I could see not happening but do you honestly think you'll notice anything at huge with fragmentation? I personally don't think it'll be that horrible.
