over the top?!

Hi,

Im quite new to overclocking and would love some experianced help!

I have a ASUS Strikes II Formula motherboard, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz CPU (i use the CPU-fan boxed with the CPU ). 8 Gb Dominator PC8500 (it was cheap... so i got alot!)

My questions:

1. How much is it "safe" to overclock the CPU? I have seen some go up to 3Ghz with the Q6600 using only fan-cooling, is that a "recommended" speed?

2. If i would like to overclock to that speed (or a speed u suggest), how should i start? What FSB should i set etc etc...

3. Will i need to upgrade the CPU-fan? In that case what can u recommend, (price don't really matter that much)?

4. To overclock the RAM, i only need to increase the voltage? How do i know when to stop!

Thanks

You will certainly want an uprated cooler.

A thermalright ultra 120 extreme is my reccomendation, however it is expensive, and if you transport your pc to lan parties alot its a bit on the heavy side.

120 x 38mm fans are reccomended on the TRUE because of the dense packing of the fins.

It is "safe" to overclock your cpu up to when you need to use more than a vcore of ~1.45v or temperatures reach 70c under orthos or prime.

Upgrade CPU HSF to Thermalright Ultra Extreme (TRUE is the acronym around here) or AC Freezer 7. Ram Voltage can be bumped up in 0.5v increments on your board, dont worry about overdoing it, the mobo will let you know. You should be able to hit 3.2-3.6Ghz with your motherboard.

Thanks for the tip!
I got the thermalright ultra 120 extreme (TRUE) and have installed it just fine

I do have trouble with the OC of board:
I start with increasing the FSB from the 1066 Mhz that it starts by to 1080 Mhz -> 1110 and so on. But the system gets unstable directly and restarts when i get asked if i want to start windows in safemode etc. So it gets past the POST (i think?).

I tried to increase the CPU V in bios, at the different FSB speeds. I have tried everything from 1.2 to 1.42 but it reboots still. Sometimes when it reboots the FSB settings returns to auto-settings on FSB etc. Seems almost like the bios resets itself, but not fully since some settings like date etc still remains intact.

Is there a setting that i should change or what?

On the TRUE, should i have two fans or one? I just installed one this time since theres only one set of the "metal strings" to fasten it with.
