not to say you can't make a reliable router, its just when a business needs a router, they want a solid product. not something someone puts together from parts. a whitebox router won't have any documentation, and will surely come with undocumented "features" that you're going to have to figure out on your own that no one else wants to deal with. if something goes wrong, say the model number to your Cisco rep and you will be connected with someone who knows exactly where the parts came from and what they can do. remember, when you're talking about Cisco, you're talking business to business grade products. not home-user game playing and web surfing. and yes, their firmware/software has been tested by millions of people in just as many circumstances.

The cisco routers also run a proprietary real-time OS. Which can handle massive amounts of traffic and packets, that even a linux box couldn't do.

Hmm you could probably consolidate 3 of those pcs onto one pc via virtualization, and save some money on your electric bill.

PC doesn't stay on all the time. Laptops don't stay on all the time. I don't want to install anything I don't have to on the server just to save hardware wear and tear. HTPC is on wireless and does a lot of processing. The only 2 pcs that stay on all the time are the HTPC and Server.

I wouldn't want my server on wireless and I can't run an ethernet cord to my HTPC (apartment).

I did do away with the D-link DI-102. I think it was actually slowing me down.

edit: Updated pic above.
