Custom Routers ARE AWESOME! - Page 16

Can I run Untangle off this?.

1.4Ghz celeron, 60GB hdd and 384MB ram.

It's a old box I have that I want to use.

Also, can you post a custom routers for dummies guide or something?. I have roughly 3 computers I would want to connect to it and perhaps a PS3. I have a router/switch already and a wireless/4-port router. But I have a feeling I'll need something else.

$99 Buy-It-Now with Free Ship: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-ITX-1-8GHz-...3A1%7C294%3A50

Intel Pentium M 1.80GHz
1GB DDR
2GB Compact Flash
1Gb NIC + 100Mb NIC
Power Brick

2GB CF is enough for light weigh distros like IPCop. Just add a 20GB HD for Untangle.
Oh, I was under the impression you needed two NICs. But you just use the onboard NIC + PCI NIC and have two ethernet ports and bang huh.
Def could go with something cheaper from ebay though lol.

No, Untangle needs at least 512MB. There are other distros you can use instead like m0n0wall, Smoothwall, or IPCop.

Each distro installation is slightly different. Untangle was probably one of the easiest possible. You just boot off the CD and install it like any other OS. Then they give you a nice GUI to set everything up.

It is $100 shipped. It has everything needed to set up a lightweigh router but needs a 20GB+ HD for Untangle. It also is low power since it uses a Pentium M CPU... judging by the power brick size, it uses less than 90w.

Does custom routers lower your ping?

Generally.... no. Ping is inherent network latency. Virtually all latency is outside of the LAN. (Run tracert to see.)

However, if you are heavily taxing your router, it may not have enough resources and this does increase latency. Your packets are getting bottlenecked as they wait to be routed.
