Do you use a crossover cable to connect to the custom router since your connecting computer to computer?

Wow, I wish I had seen these before. I ordered about $100 worth of stuff from Newegg to get my router up and running. I could've just bought one of those for $25 more

EDIT: Duckie, you mentioned it being a power hog. The system I'm going to have routing is going to use a 270w PSU and be running a 2.2Ghz Athlon 64, 1Gb of ram, 300gb hard drive (As it is all I have laying around), and an extra Intel NIC. Do you think the power savings would be significant enough for me to notice?

Were are turning our routers into switches by turning DHCP off.

Let's assume a 25w difference in average power consumption (we don't need to use peak or idle so I guesstimated). Assuming it runs 24/7 all year and the cost of electricity is $.08.... the extra cost is $17 a year.

You might want to check Dman's thread about virtualizing the router. You may want to run both a router and file server on that system since you have power to spare.
Once again...

On dhrandy's post #163 .... The last pic.

In between the (untangled) router and the wireless access point ..... can I assume that I can set it up with ..... Cable modem to (untangled) router to wireless (att) router ? without a switch

Also ... With the addons, virus, spam, spyware, ect.

Would you still want to use programs on each pc/workstation on behind the (untangled) router or would they be safe ?

Yeah I was just saying that you were right, I could go with a cheaper alternative like what you suggested. Wasn't saying that I could go cheaper than that $100 thing you linked hah.

Those speeds you linked earlier.

Internet Connection
Before: 10,000-18,000kps download and 1000kps upload.
After: 29,000kps download and 9000kps upload.
If my conversion are right, you had 125 Kilobytes per second, then went up to 1125 kilobytes per second.
My upload taps out RIGHT at 125 Kilobytes per second as well.

I still don't understand though, would you need two NIC's for two ethernet ports, or just one NIC and use the onboard NIC as well?

Hmm, if Newegg didn't charge 15% restocking as well as having to pay for shipping I would totally get one of those rackmount systems. What I have will be good enough, maybe except the ram. I'd like to have 2gb but DDR is way more expensive than DDR2 lol.

any way to integrate cable modem functionality?

i'm moving into a friends place (going back to school) and the network consists of a netgear modem/wireless access point (in one unit). it's h3114 slow for just 3 college students.

Oh if only I'd even have connection bandwidth to benefit from this but 8/2mb isn't really needy

I don't know why I didn't think of this, but the Intel NIC I bought doesn't fit the HTPC case I got to put it in. Pretty big fail.
