Custom Routers ARE AWESOME! - Page 24

I bought that box you recommended, but those guys sure take their time on the shipping. I bought it the day before christmas and thye just sent it out this morning. On top of that, I'm leaving the country for 10 days starting saturday and i won't be able to do anything with it until about half way through january. I got my bittorrent slave/ftp server up and running though .

It is probably the holidays for them too.

Big bump, I know.

I just went through half of this thread and skimmed the last half. Lots of good info. I have two desktops with wireless connections, a laptop, and a NAS...none of which seem fast enough for me. I picked out some parts I think will work, but I would like a second opinion.

Foxconn RS233 ITX-Barebone It has an onboard 10/100.
Intel PWLA8391GTL 10/100/1000Mbps Lo-pro for the barebone.

From what I read that is all I need. I have a hard drive, 512 stick of ram, cd drive to install Untangle and a wireless router.

Thanks!

You need at least a 20GB HD (someone is selling some small ones for $10 in the sales section).

I would recommend 1GB if you are running Untangle. Mine uses around 600MB idle with most of the packages installed.

(Nevermind, you have the other parts already).

pfSense is another popular router OS around here. It is MUCH lighter and has superior QoS features.

Awesome. The HD is 80GB, so that's plenty. I'll just order another stick of ram, it's cheap enough these days. Thanks.

I'll give pfSense a look too, it can't hurt. Although the screenshots of Untangle and just what I've read about it in this thread, I'm already liking it.

Tried an Old DELL Dimension 2100, 1.1GHz, 512Mb but ran into the dreaded hang issue at "Probing BASE ...pata_qdi.ko"

Can't seem to find a fix at Untangle forums.
Bios updated, RAM tests OK, unnecessary devices removed.
Still a no go.
Any ideas?

(I did manage to load Untangle on one of the C2D rigs. Farkin Awesome.)

Sorry...not a Linux guy... you can try and check the Debian forums. I had an install issue as well but was resolved by a BIOS update.

Well I got my router finished running Untangle. I like it. My speedtest benchmark didn't improve a huge amount, 6000/400 to 6800/500, but overall surfing speed feels much faster. I didn't get the same rig as I wanted, the wife wouldn't let me spend that much so I scraped together what parts had and only needed to buy another 512 stick of ram and a case.

1.8 Celeron 430
1GB Corsair ValueSelect
80GB Western Digital
Intel D549GCC9 Mobo w/ Onboard 10/100
Intel PWLA8391GT 10/100/1000 NIC
Cheapie Rosewill MicroAtx Case
