Most "residential gateways" that you purchase are only capable of 64-200ish simultaneous connections. It takes processing power to route packets and a bit more for Quality of Service. On home "routers", maintaining 1000+ connections is impossible while a custom router can as long as it has enough resources. A home router is nothing more than a specialized PC with a 150-300MHz CPU with 2-16MB RAM and 2-16MB Flash.

pata_qdi.ko error - I have posted on Untangle's forums.

Both Dell Dimensions are using the A14 Bios
I haven't been able to find anything more recent.
That's a similar error to what I was having originally.... some kind of HD controller error.
Once again...

Guess I'll be waiting a little longer...but it looks like the bundle would be ideal for the project.

Thanks for the tip. I spent some time configuring that and also went ahead and added in the ethernet cables. Wow...I've been on wireless for so long I forgot how nice wired was.
-The file transfers to my nas went from 150 kbps to 11.2 mbps.
-Torrenting improved substantially
-My wife's computer can actually hold a 100% stable connection now

Thanks for this thread and the helpful posts Duckie.

Ok since you have NIC1, and NIC2, do you have to bridge them together like u can in XP?

OK so this thread seems to die and come back again and again, but anyway, I just wanted to say that I've got my Untangle Server going and this thing is incredible.

I go to may favorite torrent sites (we'll just call them PB and MN) that are typically flooded with adds, now they have no adds.

When my wife accidentally surfs to some phishing site UT completely blocks it. All this and I have lost no surfing speed.

It's cool to know that so much of the junk out there can't even reach my LAN.

Thanks go out to Duckie for sharing this.

I just finish building a custom router running Untangle: www.untangle.com This Open Source router package is one of the heavier ones since it has a LOT of addons for firewall and packet scanning. It is running on a Celeron M 410 (1.4GHz Core), 1GB RAM, 40GB HD, and 2 Gb NICs.

This is an upgrade from a relatively fast router DGL-4300. From experience, this gaming router had outperformed my WRT54GS with DD-WRT.

Let me tell you..... customer routers are AWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't done much testing just yet but browsing is diffently improved. I can open like 20 content-rich links at once and they all finish in less than 5s. The old setup would have taken 10-20s. I'll try to post pics and some benchies tomorrow.
Yeah. The two firewalls I made at work are on Gentoo, running iptables + port knocking... So much more customizable, and I'm barely toying with the security option. Set-up my DMZ and the rest of the network just dandy with the state options.

I'd like to hear some opinions on how Untangle rates vs running dhcp through Windows Server ('03 or '08). Anyone ever play with both?
