Untangle is a router, bridge, or re-router. It cannot be a bridge. There are other distributions that have that capability of supporting up to something like 8 NICs. However, a separate switch would be cheaper ($10-30).

You could dual boot... but what's the point really?

untangle may not be able to, but there are other router distributions out there that can.

and if you have a wireless router now, you can always turn it into a bridge...

Running PFSense with a ton of services, load balancing two internet connections, dhcp server on firewire, dmz to a honeypot and IDS, captive portal for public wireless, private wireless, vpn, web cache, etc etc etc

6 Nics...

running a p4 2.4ghz with a gb of ram and two mirrored 60gb drives...

can't wait for the next version to be released...

That's for a residential setup? What's your avaliable bandwidth? Do you really need a honeypot and IDS?

OK, I've looked at the Untangle site a bit and since you have firsthand experience with this, DuckieHo, I'll ask you:

I currently have a D-Link DGL-4100 1Gbps router, and what I really want is to be able to use QoS to give my gaming and browsing traffic higher priority and make bittorrent traffic and my roommate's traffic low-priority (she freeloads off the connection because i'm nice). My DGL-4100 has an issue where if i uncap the torrent speeds in uTorrent, the flood of upstream data fills up the buffer in the router and it drops the entire connection. Googling has revealed that this happens to other people as well. Getting to the point... If I throw Untangle on my 2.6ghz/2GB ram box (running Windows Server 2008 x64 w/ Active Directory, IIS, FTP, mail, etc), will I be able to do QoS properly like I want? Whats your experience with that feature?

Quick question about this, are you able to put multiple computers into the DMZ zone or no?

Again... there are other router distributions so...

I am not sure how distribution will working running virtualized. I guess your machine will need 3 NICs... two for the virtualized router and one for the Server 2008?

uTorrent is main reason I built this box. My old router was running out of resources to handle all the connections. I assume 5x more processing power and 50x more memory is more than enough resources. I haven't had time to really do testing but will have time tonight.

Sure.... use a switch. There are other distributions that allow multiple NICs which you can assign to DMZ.

Could you maybe link me to what NIC cards you used?
And Im still kind of unclear on how you got the wireless on it.
