Custom Routers ARE AWESOME! - Page 6

Will this help out with lanparties? last time I had 16 people hooked up to a WRT54G with DDWRT (which ate up almost all the ram) and the internet was horribly slow. Will setting up a cusom router like this help in situations like mine?

Kinda bored, looking for a project, I would probably do a Atom, or the 22W Athlon for this build, Can anyone point me in the right direction to building a custom router?

( I would need distro's, and why, gateways, switches, the whole works, I R a noob here, But as I said, noob to networking, I have yet to go wireless, should I just get a DGL-4300 and call it a day?)

Would this card work?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...3166004http://
I have 4 pci slots so I could technically have 5 devices hooked up (including the on board port)

edit: If I had only two NICs I could just use a switch to hook up more devices correct?

If I am getting the fullest out of my ISP over wireless now is there a point to make one of these?

It should work fine. I'm using a 2.4 P4 with 768mb ram.

As Duckio and I have stated, this is faster than our dgl-4300. If I were going to go wireless today, I would go wireless N.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing.

I really don't see the point if your getting the fullest. But if you have an extra computer laying around with two nic cards, why not give it a try.

What are the actual chips used? BroadComm, Realtek, ect? Don't forget that Untangle is NOT to build a switch. There are other distros for that.

Are you only using wireless? Do you torrent or have a server?

I was playing BF2142 last night while running a torrent at 200kbps download and 1Mbps upload. My BF2142 pings did slightly increase by less than 5ms and jumped every few seconds by 20ms. However, this is WAY better than my old routers. Even with QoS, the old routers would lock up, increase latency by 50-100ms consistently, and not get even close to those DL/UL speeds.

I tested it yesterday.... ~30,000kps down and ~9,000kps up.

(Note that I was torrenting just one file at the time. I haven't played around with it more just yet)

I would agree that a linux router is way faster then anything you can buy other then an enterprise cisco router. I have centos at home right now acting as a router/nat firewall/dhcp server, on an athlon 4850be x2. Much faster when you have multiple ports and connections incoming, when I had a torrent open the web browsing would crawl, now with the linux box there is no slow down at all when having tons of connections open, even the PS3 seems to do internet transfers faster (i think the psn uses some sort of peer to peer networking) Going to do some more advanced networking on it and probably some virtualization as well on the server thats why the specs are overkill for just a router. And to all those who want to try out utangle, you could probably virtualize it on your existing pc and get it to route just fine.

I have been wondering about this... How many NICs are required for this? How is virtualized-OS to host-OS routing handled?

I didn't know this was true... but if so, I'll just move Untangle to my WHS box!
