I think ReRouter is just for the Spyware/Virus/Spam feature.... If you actually use it as a router, your Internet performance gets noticeably better.

Yeah from what I've read by you and others as well their site I would agree.

I'm going to setup, once I can find a suitable older HDD (largest I have now is only 4gb lol ), I have a few 1ghz Pentium Celeron's in old cases with multiple NIC's around.

Have to find me a hard drive from a pile here or somewhere, lol.

Thanks again and if I do go hardware route, which I will for increased folding and now this, I'll let ya know Duckie

Get any computer from the last 5 years and make sure it has at least 2 NICs. Install a router distro and configure. There are light weigh ones (400MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, 1GB Flash) and then there are heavy ones (1.6GHz+ CPU, 512MB, 20GB HD).

The real question is, can you build a dedicated router PC that performs better than a commercial-grade router for less money?

Something like this:
barebone system: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856167036
AMD 4850e cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103255
2GB memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034
additional NIC: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833166015
boot off a flash drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227233

Total price: $250.35 shipped.

compared to CISCO CISCO2821 10/100/1000Mbps 2821 Int. Services Router 2 x 10/100/1000Mbps LAN Ports - Retail ($2,799.99): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833120092

I would go with a Compact Flash instead of USB Thumb drives. CF are recognized as IDE drives and are easier to find industrial grade ones. The log files will wear out a standard flash drive in 3-5 years.

K9N6PGM2-V = 100Mb NIC.

I believe Rosewill uses Realtek NIC... which suck. Intel NICs are vastly superior. If I was building such a highend router, I would make sure to get quality NICs as well.

If I paid the electricity bill then I'd definitely do this. My Mum moans about them all the time though so I'll pass this up.

I think he meant generic custom router.

pfSense, m0n0wall, and IPCop all can run on 1GB.
