DSL networking

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I have a couple of questions about how DSL works.

1. The DSL guy came in and setup our line. Currently my roomie has the DSL modem plugged into his phone jack. Can I buy a separate modem and plug it into my phone jack?

2. If I can't use two separate modems can we switch the modem over to my room?

3. If I can't do either, can I have the DSL guy install the same line over near my room? I think someone said something about bridging? It uses the same line but you can both use modems.

I'm on wireless

If you're on wireless, buy a wireless router such as this and plug your roomies modem into that, then you can share the internet connection and thus the love

1. Generally, you can only use one modem, as it logs you in by MAC address.
2. You can plug it into any phone jack on the same line. It won't work if you plug it into a different line (phone number), as it is set up for a specific line.
3. Probably the easiest thing would be to just go to almost any store (Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, anyplace that sells phones) and get a long cord. Plug it into his line and run it over to your room.

If it's a standard modem, wouldn't it only come with one port? Plus, he's using wireless. I see the fix here as a wireless router, win for everyone

You can only have one modem plugged in per household or they will charge you for two bills. You can plug this modem in anywhere you want, as long as there is a phone jack there and you use splitters on all your active phone jacks, including the modem's.

Bridging is when you take two or more separate lines/plans and balance the load between them. Sometimes small businesses do this so they do not have to pay corporate prices for one single high bandwidth line.

I'd either run a CAT5 over to your room or get a wifi router. Make sure you don't go over 350ft. on that CAT5 cord though because your performance will be degraded.
