We hit 20mb very often here. Here are my various speedtests:

As for the throttling. I could have sworn it was 6gb
EDIT: Sorry, its 6gb for me as im on the 20mb package as its a % of the threshold
Yes you can get 20mb/s on ADSL, well not twenty but close, try Be for that, £17 a month and I used to get 18-20 mb/s (before some roadwork idiots cut the wire, hasn't been the same since). But we were getting that at peak time, and look at the price difference, and NO TRAFFICING. With Be I can eat my cake and have it.

Its not 6gb a day.. Its 6gb between 9-3 and then 3gb between 4-9pm (i think)
Since we rarely wake up or get online before 2pm the limits don't affect us. Then add student discount to the price its works out pretty well.

Oh, and since we dont have a phone line in the house we haven't got much choice

No you can't, but you can on ADSL2+ ;-)

FTTC or even better FTTH.
Virgin's just a hybrid of FTTC and DOCSIS 3.0, but the ASA allowed them to advertise their service as fibre optics.
