Taking back my USB stick

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

A while ago I installed Arch Linux on a USB stick I have. Now, whenever I insert it into my Windows machine it only recognizes one of the tiny, megabyte-sized partitions, and whenever I insert it into my Ubuntu machine it doesn't recognize it as a device, it only sees the various partitions. I tried this umount /dev blah blah and mkfs ext3 somethingorother but it only works on the first partition of the stick, and beyond that it gets too complicated for me.

How can I 'un-partition' it, format it completely and get it back to its normal size so I can use it to create an Ubuntu 8.10 Live USB?

In Disk Manager (control panel, admin tools) there should be an option to format and many others.
I'm not sure if it'll work or not though.

It only lets me format one partition at a time, which is useless. Attempts to delete the partitions result in this:

I guess I'll have to do this in Linux.. Not like it makes a difference, I'm clueless either way.

I am just curious as to why you would partition a USB flash drive. Care to shed some light?

One reason is to have persistent data saved on the USB stick while you're using the Live OS.

OP, pop it in your Linux box and run fdisk or gparted.

I installed Arch Linux on it because I wanted to try it and I didn't have any spare drives. The installer partitioned it as if it was a hard drive. And now I'm screwed.

edit: oh man, GParted worked. Without a hitch or a sweat. I could kiss you.
