AM2 mobo

Thread Starter
Looking for a new mobo so that i can get some better ram to OC with.

It will be running a 6400+ processor
hard drive is a 7200, i dont think its sata compatible
case is large so doesn't need to be a micro board, plus bigger boards aren't as fiddly
running 32bit at the moment but 64 bit compatibility would be good for when i change over.
and it can run my 9500GT GPU, yes i know it isn't the greatest but it does the job.

only thing holding me back is currently not being able to adjust voltages (ram, cpu, etc) to OC with so this would be the main advantage that i am going for. However most manufacturers aren't useful and don't provide you with the options available in the bios.

thanks

There are a lot of good choices available right now. I recently tried an AM2 board from Asrock and was suprised at how well it did for a budget mainboard.
Can you give more info on your budget and what your intended use weill be so that we may better help you? Oh I also understand the latest 790x platform is a good OC'er as well but haven't seen much on here about em yet.

Squark, check out the Biostar TForce TA780G. All though it's only mATX it does however offer quite a few overclocking options. Unfortunately I couldn't find any reliable reviews on this motherboard. The price is also within your range. Are you located in the UK? Novatech is an excellent place to shop for items located in the UK.

Good luck with your purchases

can you try and link me to a decent board on that website, all the ones i can find seem to be running ATI and on-board graphics which dont need to be that impressive as i have a card to stick in

In that price range, if you want an ATX board and not a micro ATX board, the 770 chipset would work. I'd probably go with this one, as I really like Gigabyte boards

If you're willing to spend a little more, here's a 780G that is actually ATX, not micro ATX, and even has CrossFire support. Just when I thought I understood the naming scheme I see something like this to blow my mind haha. This board has the advantage of CrossFire and RAID support and a newer southbridge.

Both boards will work great with an older X2 6400+. I think most of the advantages of the 780G are for Phenom CPU's. So go with whichever you prefer and can afford!

thanks durch
so i think im going to go with the
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...ml?GIG-MA7DS3#
as it offers some extra features such as loads of fan headers

can anyone confirm that this board is OC'able
from here it looks like it is a nice board and someone mentions bumping up the voltage

also as a stupid side question does it effect the graphic card whether you are running ATI or Nvidia
As i currently have a nvidia geforce 9500GT

Squark, I can almost guarantee the MA7DS3 has overclocking options available. Most Gigabyte BIOS's have few options hidden. While in the BIOS, hit CTRL+F1. That should reveal the "Advanced Options" menu which will display the DRAM Configuration options. I did some reading on this board and supposedly the initial release came with BIOS F2. That BIOS had some compatibility issues but most of them were solved in BIOS F3.

I believe the chipset shouldn't be a problem if you're running a nVidia video card. Just as long as you download and install the proper device drivers.

Good luck
