Card is back....keep or upgrade?

Thread Starter
Ok guys, in my previous thread i mentioned that my XFX 8800 Ultra went down on me and i managed to send it in for repair. The card is now back and is working like before.

I oc-ed my 8800 Ultra slightly to 621/1566/1134 (just like before) and used ATI's scan for artifect to stress test my card. The temperature stayed below 78 degree for a 30-mins duration of ati stress test - artifect-free

So, should i keep the card or should i go for an overhaul upgrade now to core i7 setup?

I initially holds zero hope that my card can be repaired and i gona lose it for sure. However, now that things turn out differently, i would like to hear you guys' opinion.

Another question in mind is whether can the 8800 Ultra support the latest titles like Far Cry 2/Fallout 3 in the market without compromising too much on performance. A FPS of 40+ is acceptable for me

Have tried my card on Crysis and Warhead, managed to play them both at decent setting (not high setting).

So....sell my card away or wait for some other time to upgrade?

first off no point in upgrading...because you have a 17 inch monitor.

I wouldn't go to i7 or a new graphics card...with that monitor.

Upgrade to a 22/24 inch monitor then upgrade your video card to something like a GTX of 4870. Otherwise no point in upgrading because your rig is perfectly fine on that monitor.

and yes the card can play all the latest games on your monitor...now if you don't have that monitor and its not updated then you should possibly move to a beefier card first.

Wouldn't it make more sense to upgrade his video card before he gets a new monitor? Otherwise he'll be playing games on the new monitor at either horrible FPS or a resolution below native until he upgrades his video card.

Upgrade monitor and then realize you need to upgrade your video card.

Thanks guys, i am using a 22 inch monitor now for gaming. The 17 inch monitor in my sig is sold off long time ago. So is 8800 Ultra a powerful enough card for me to play Far Cry2/Fallout 3 on a 22 inch LCD monitor? I mean decent fps like 40fps+.

Yeah it is.....I get around 55fps in FC2 with my sig rig at 1680x1050.

yeah I see no huge point to upgrade on a 22 if you get decent FPS on those particular games.

But once a few more games roll out I suggest moving to a beefier card. Possibly wait til early 2009 when the 55nm GTX's hit and the old ones drop in price.

Thanks guys for all the advices. Yea, i believe 2009 will be the right time to upgrade given Pci Express 2.0, new generation of CPU and VGA + variety of mobo which can do both SLI and CrossFirex.

Will be using this setup for now then

Is that your max FPS or average? What kind of setting are you using in the game?
