I suspect a dead card... opinions?

Thread Starter
My card refuses to game, even on simple games such as quake2.. folding also is a complete loss, I havent been able to complete a work unit in over a week using this card, despite many attempts.

Everything was running fine, until one day while folding I had a driver crash.. afterwards I rebooted the machine and everything seemed ok at first, then windows started artifacting (literally, the windows OS was artifacting) then a bluescreen saying nv4disp.bla had a problem and killed my card (not literally). So I rebooted once again and everything was fine, even able to fold for a few days.. then my PPD went through the floor, no completed units, etc.

At the time, I was running the 180.36 (I believe) and upgraded to the latest WHQL 180.48. When I upgraded, I uninstalled old drivers, but did NOT driver sweep them out in safe mode. Problem remained. Then after a few days of trial runs, this morning I removed 180.48, sweeped it out, downloaded a new 180.48 and installed it. No change, still bluescreens on quake2, folding is a loss, etc.

I noticed that the card was running at like 70+C most of the time when folding. I had the fan to %100 and it was still over 70. I had to take a gigantic 120v desktop style fan (for people, not computers) to cool it down, and even then it only went down to 65!!!

So, toasted card?

P.S. there was NO overclock during the last few tests.. when the problems started however it was overclocked to 675 from 600, and ive had that card at 714, and running much cooler than it has been recently. Reseated the card, cleaned out all ducts/fans etc.

Have you tried any of the beta drivers? 180.84

Also what card are you talking about...your rig shows 2 9800GTX+

70C-80C is avg temps...not considered "hot" for a GPU. above 90C would be considered a "hot" card. But GPU's can handle 100C without dmg. I've seen a card sitting at 115C and take no damage after 2 hours of stress lol.

Anyways please update us on what card you are talking about. If after reinstalling and cleaning out beta drivers and its still doing it. Make sure it has its power plugs put in also. I would suggest RMA.

EDIT- I also suggest...trying 1 card at a time and if you have a spare computer testing them individually in another computer. If they work its driver related.

Nah, graphics cards are much tougher than CPUs. Theoretically, the max safe GPU temp is ~95C (For recent cards, anyhow).

Though not related to heat, I got a feeling it was the overclock that did. Perhaps some driver-level corruption occurred. o_O

Boot up with the cards separated or by themselves. If one screen or Windows artifacts with one card, I think it could be the cards.

have you been able to limit it to that single video card? Take out the SLI component and run single card solution. Test to see if it is the card or the sli'ing of the card

*facepalm*

I should have specified lol, sry bout that. The card is an XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog. The rig its in is:

e6600 @ 2.93ghz
Asus P5N-E SLI 650i
500w PSU dual rail, plenty of power

BUT

Small update. I just installed a 7300LE in there, and now quake2 plays fine. Drivers I am using now is the latest 7 series (178.xx)

So I guess that means its dead jim

If you can't/won't RMA, pull it apart and see what the thermal compound looks like. Replace it with AS5. Then do a driver cleaner pro on the old drivers and try again. Worth a shot I suppose.
