Q6600. You need a new motherboard though.

I am deciding the same thing. Majority of the people have said the e8400 beings I game a lot. One said that if I plan on upgrading in the next 2 years to choose the e8400, but if I do not plan to upgrade in the next 2 years to choose the quad.

But on my motherboard the q6600 does not oc well. Not sure how well it would oc on the board you will choose, so your results could lean more towards the q6600, where mine have lead to the e8400.

I'm still not sure, it is a very tough choice.

If you do lots of "other" stuff then get the Q6600. I like to game in windows, run dual monitors, browse the web, watch videos pretty much at the same time. My old rig with the dual core use to struggle sometimes and lockup if I was doing too many things lol.

My new rig has no problems =D Guys he's getting a "new rig" so nothing in his sig counts lol....so yeah a Q6600 is the best bet.

If you aren't doing things such as CAD work, encoding, or folding 24/7 and plan to upgrade in the next couple years i would go with the e8400 or even the e8500 (since it is only $20 more)

If you do things that take advantage of the quad core technology go with the q6600.

I'm kinda biased on this, but I would say the Q6600. I can run "most" of my games on high or near-high graphics and I have mine stock 2.4GHz. Also, I love to multi-task and being able to set different processes to different cores is something I don't think I could pass up.

I have had many quads and many dual cores, at this point in time the best bet is dual cores for most gamers. In 99% of games the Wolfdale owns the Q6600 clock for clock....not to mention the much higher clocks you will get with an E8400.

The wolfdale is also fine for cad work, I do lots of cad and solidworks (engineering student) and the wolfdale is great.

I'll get the Q6600 prolly 3.5GHz~3.7GHz with watercooling system.

so It'll be pretty good and futureprofe instead of E8400 imo..

what do you think?
