How to Ship a Desktop?

Thread Starter
Doesn't seem like there's a thread on this, so I thought I would get all of your input.

It’s that time of year when all you little college buggers, including myself, are going back home. No doubt that some of you cannot possibly live for a month with your rig, like me. So, its time to ship your rig? What do you do?

Hit me with your input.

I just put mine through Fedex in the Case Box that I built the computer in, with all its original padding. The question is: is there anything else that should be done? Should certain items be taken out so that they do not rattle around? It’s too late for me, everything felt secure and I took out insurance, but how should a system be prepped for shipping through a possibly volatile trip?

If you have aftermarket GPU's then I would take them out. You know that the box is going to get slammed around an you don't want to trash that new card that you just put in there. Other than that, The box with all the padding that the case came in should do just fine.

Your typical rig will just barely fit in the overhead luggage rack, but good luck getting it past the TSA.

If you must ship it, do not use the postal service, and do buy insurance.

Just remove your gpu and cpu cooler and you're fine. That's what I do, anyway.

Next time, I'll take off the CPU cooler and GPU. I have a monster of a GPU, but it is screwed into the case with two screws so I dont think it will wobble. The CPU Cooler, I'm now worried about though because its got those snap in pins, but everything feels real secure.

I'm dreading getting back and having some horrible bios error, but I'm pretty sure it will be okay.

PS: Fedex Seems to be the cheapest to send large/heavy packages through. Cost me 28 Dollars for my 45 pound full tower, with 900 dollars of insurance.

I'll have to get back to you all on how the ship went though.
