How to rip my movies (DVD)

Thread Starter
Ok i'm a total nub when it comes to ripping DVDs onto my computer (encoding / recode?) - Don't even know if this is in the right section...

I'd like to put a few DVD movies on my computer so I can add them to my MP4 player (I can watch movies on that while on a flight/train etc).

I've tried to use Nero 7 Recode Essentials to pull my movies from DVD but Nero says the discs are copy protected.

I hear about people pulling their DVDs to their PC all the time so they can watch the movies without having to put the disc in.

How is it done?

I use Magic DVD Ripper. It's not free, but it has a trial I think. It's also not too expensive if I remember correctly. It can copy DVD's, even compress a larger DVD to fit on a Single-Layer disc. It can also save it to your hard drive in a variety of formats for differing file size and quality.

I use the free version of Dfab HD decrypter. http://www.dvdfab.com/

But I suppose you would need to convert the video to MP4, and for that I don't know what the good converters are. Nevermind you would be better off with a one step solution.

The easiest way would be to first copy the DVD to the hard drive with DVD Decrypter (free), then use Handbrake (free), to encode to the ipod format (probably compatible with your MP4 player). Handbrake is pretty easy to use and I would highly recommended it.

Well, all I have to say is that's pretty stupid.

In any case, OP should had to doom9 and ask.
It's THE place to go when asking this kind of question, and they do allow asking perfectly legal questions.

Well alrighty, sorry for shaking things up....

I was under the impression that basic copyright laws allow for the the purchaser to own the original copy and one (1) back-up copy for their own personal use.

I'm pretty sure thats the case but no need to stir the pot any further - don't want anyone getting in trouble.

Mods feel free to close this thread.
