First Time builder confused!!!

Thread Starter
Okay so I just bought an Intel core i7 920 and the stock heatsink (I don't have the cash for an aftermarket yet) has this sticky stuff on the surface that supposed to contact the processor. That is the thermal paste right? Because it said it would come with some but there was none in the box...

Thanks a lot :-)

Yes, it's preapplied, just set it down on the CPU.

Yeah that is what it is. It's not really paste though and the stuff really sucks, but it works. Just don't expect to overclock it much.

EDIT:

That stuff will be on your GPU as well if you decide to take of the stock cooler.

Yes, it would be the thermal paste. If you're not sure about it, go buy some from your local PC store to be safe, it's relatively inexpensive. I take my thermal paste off with a wet tissue, but alcohol swabs/wipes will do an equally good job if not better. Good luck, fantastic CPU you've got, I'm jealous...

Thanks a lot guys :-) I'm not planning to overclock till I get an aftermarket heat sink anyway so I'm not so worried. I need to go buy a static mat anyway so I'll probably get some paste then, or just wait till I order a new heat sink.

Thanks a lot though :-)

Some aftermarket heatsinks come with their own pastes, either preapplied or in a tube, but it's always nice to have backup in case you need to reseat it later.
