4850x2 : noise, performance?

Thread Starter
I can get a 4850x2 1GB for less than a GTX 280. I'm overhauling my entire system in the next 1 - 1.5 months tops. Now how loud is this card? Lots of reviews are complaining about the noise etc. I'm planning on buying the Coolermaster HAF or Cosmos S so cooling shouldn't be an issue but still, supposedly its louder than the 4870x2? Also has the performance on these cards increased since the new driver releases?

I play UT3, CS:S, Fallout 3, Bioshock and will probably pickup Crysis. I'm also planning on getting a 24" monitor, so I'll be gaming at 1920x1200. I figured this is a better card because even though from reviews its a bit faster than a GTX 280, most reviews never mention average *** MIN *** frames and I'm guessing the 4850x2 will have higher average min will less drops in framerates. I'm still looking around on the net for more current reviews of the card though.

Thanks.

From the reviews I've seen, it seems pretty loud

There are several reviews on the card posted in the news section. The general consensus is that its faster than the GTX280 right across the board (as it should be, its two cards).

sound, you'll have to read the reviews. I am assuming the new dual fan setup is probably quieter than what is used on the 4870X2 as it has double the cooling capabilities.

I'm not sure about sound. But performance wise, it will play all of the games you specified easily and apparently its faster than a gtx280

It's loud because of the fan profiles.

But even though it's loud, it cools the GPU cores much more efficiently; idle and load didn't go over 70 from what I read.

If you prefer silence, ATITool is just a click away.

Guess you have to sacrifice in some noice for performance. It's expected for something that large.

Agreed, I'm just so sick of the whine on my x1900xtx it makes me sick lol. I realize ati tool can fix that, but whats a safe speed for desktop use? I ran mine on my x1900xtx at like 20% this one night before i went to bed and i had to restart my comp because my video wouldnt come on.

I want this card because for the money I just don't see anything better. I wonder what the gtx295 is going to be like, hmmm....

Make sure it will fit in your case. It's over 11 inches long.

if you turn it up past defualt levels (20%) it is very audible. i have never heard it go up and i have it set at defualt auto. I feel i have stressed it pretty hard. 1920x1080 4xAA edge effect. i did think i rememer a review with the x2 haveing better frame rates pretty much all around. especially with AA on.

So as long as your case is fairly cool it is not as annoying as the reviews say?
