Tom's didn't keep the HT link low enough, this was from another AMD event.
from the article you linked (thanks btw):

- With air cooling (Cooler Master Z600) highest we got Crysis stable was @ 4,13 GHz (1,58 V)

damn nice! Now I wonder what the temps were.

If it took 1.8v to reach 5.0GHz, so be it. It's a suicide run, after all. It's to be expected that the voltage will get crazy. A suicide run bares no witness to what people will be achieving in real world overclocking. No one runs their Intel CPU at 5.0GHz either without upping the voltage THAT high beyond the norm. "Omgz, 1.8v!11!11. Phenom II is teh suck11!!"

Read the damn topic, AMD's voltage MAY work differently than Intel's, if it doesn't, good for you, You proved that Intel may as well charge $1000 for every CPU!

I hope this all works out for AMD, we need more competition...

Oh, why's that? Do they reach 5.0GHz+ on 1.3v or something? The point I was making is that people jump to conclusions based upon suicide runs -- as if it bares witness to REAL WORLD overclocking. If they're going to achieve an out-of-the-norm overclock, obviously insane voltage(s) shall be applied. So, I don't see what all the cringing is about when it comes to high voltages used in suicide runs -- and then conclude that the CPU "sucks".

not all ICs are created equal.

noone said that 1.8V was high in the coppermine era...

voltage is relative to the IC in question. yes 1.8V is high, but it's not as high as 1.8V on nehalem in terms of circuit deterioration

We don't know if the guys had their ACC set correctly either. If they aren't used to OCing Phenoms, then they wont get high results.
