What is a Pagefile?

Thread Starter
I know that it is put on a hard disk when the ram is becoming filled. But what does it actually do, where is it (in Vista), and if I have to many is that bad. In Windows Task Manager it says I have Kernel Memory (MB) 248.

If you have too much pagefile space, it's pretty much just a waste, a good measure is PF size = RAM * 1.5.

The pagefile, as you know, is there to be filled if there is insufficient RAM in your system, and it's pretty much what it does, it acts as additional RAM.

The paging file is pre-partitioned space on your HD done by Windows so that if a program eats up I'd say 97% of your RAM, AKA Games, the information not used as much, say the background processes, gets dumped into the paging file, to be accessed as needed. The paging file isn't nearly as fast as RAM, though, so only information that isn't accessed a lot is put there, when you're gaming, that game takes priority over everything else, or tries to.
