Core i7 or not?

Thread Starter
Ok, so I am confused as always

I have a buddy that really wants an upgrade but not sure if he really wants a core i7.

He really does nothing but games. Are the i7's making a huge impact on gaming or are they still about the same as the C2 march. performance wise?

Last i read it wasn't improving the performance that much and most certainly didn't have a nice price/performance ratio.

But he really wants an upgrade so he is looking at getting a 780i mb and DDR3 ram to replace his 750i mb and DDR2 ram. He's running dual 9800GX2's and is wanting to see a bit of a performance gain. I assumed wrong and told him that he should see about a 5% increase in performance going to the 780i which apparently is wrong as the 8x on his 750i's second pci-e slot isn't a hinder as I thought it was.(I was corrected earlier in the Nvidia section).

So is a core i7 wise for him? Or will it still be a marginal performance gain?

And yes I feel stupid about now, been about a month since I have been able to read up on things and all has changed once again.

You need a x58 to run a i7 if he gets a 780 he should just a C2Q

If I were him I'd wait and NOT upgrade to a 780i. I agree with you that he'll see VERY minimal performance gains. What kind of 750i is it? My eVGA FTW one is dual 16x...

I wouldn't go Core i7 just yet. Nothing is really going to take advantage of it right now, and prices will continue to fall for a while. I just bought myself a nice Q9550, which arrived today, and I'm not planning to go Core i7 for a while, since I think my rig will handle most things for a while... with dual 9800GX2s I think his will as well.. what kind of CPU does he have?

i7 is 20% faster clock-for-clock than Core2...

But I think the real-world (noticeable) difference would be negligible and would probably only make itself shown in benchmarks.

What resolution does he game at?

I was thinking Q9550/9650. If i7 is an option then high-end 775 should be affordable too. and he can pick DDR2 or DDR3.

Q6600 is last gen.

Ok, yea I know the X58 is needed, that was a given. He has an E8400 oc'ed to I think 4.1Ghz. And yes The i7 is 20% faster clock for clock but as far as gaming goes there has been no substantial gains in real world gaming. In benchmarks yes the cpu score is higher but when you go get avg fps from games there is very minimal gain from what I have seen. But I always compare to my Q which does help even it being at 4.0Ghz for me not to feel like there is a worthy gain.

But as I said he wants to upgrade and has his eye on a new mb and ram, which the mb could be swapped out for a decent X58 with no price increase. (hence why I didn't mention it earlier)

And it is a MSI 750i mb he has now, he said it runs his SLI 16x/8x for who wanted to know.

Thanks for the help guys. Just trying to grasp it myself so I can bring his expectations where they should be. He has it in his head with a Core i7 build and his gfx cards he'll be running 200+ fps in Crysis.

Agreed with the real-world/noticeable difference is likely negligible at this time. I think the 20% faster clock-for-clock is in very specific instances, like unzipping archives (and likely due to HT being enabled on the i7 processors).

I wouldn't say it's worth the price at the moment given that hardware is above and beyond what any game demands at the moment. I also wonder what resolution he's gaming at? I mean, even dual 4870X2's or gtx 280's will max anything at 1080p with a decent core 2 clocked decently high (4GHz).

The price of the low-end i7 processor is about on-par with core 2 quad 45nm, but keep in mind the motherboards and RAM for the i7's are too damn expensive to justify the purchases if you ask me. That would keep me away from them for quite some time...

My current rig maxes out Crysis.. at 4xAA except in the most difficult places where it's 2xAA (and that's the original, not Warhead). No need for Core i7 there. Graphics cards will do you more good than processing speed. I say stick with what he has for the time being, and if he really wants an upgrade get new GPU(s).

I agree, but when you get the upgrade bug it's hard to get rid of it without new hardware. Well, it's his money so I'll let him do whatever he wants and be curious about his results.

And yea, maxing Crysis out isn't the hard part or unbelievable it's the 200fps that I can't believe. I mean sure I can't max Crysis out but of course better hardware like those GTX 280's can. I'm gonna see if I can't just talk him into getting those.
