Recommend Me a Wireless Router <$100

Thread Starter
Ok, well I'm sick of not having a wireless router for my dorm room and since it's that time of the year again, I need your advice. I need something that I can plug my printer into and/or support an external hard drive. Also, I'd prefer it to be Wireless-G or N since my iPod and Macbook both support it. The amount of ethernet ports is also not an issue since I will not be using them at all.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Airport Express because of it's small form factor, simplicity, ability to support a printer and it's "Air-Tunes" feature. Now the thing that I would like that is missing from this product is the support for an external hard drive. One upside to it and a feature I really like is the fact that I can plug in a set of speaker to it and it will output music to them streaming over the network using iTunes or w/e other media programs it supports.

So help me, please? +Rep for useful suggestions/explanations.

D Link DIR655 I own one and it has been absolutely fantastic.

D-Links are rock solid and i am a supporter of their products. The QoS on it is really nice and easy to set up for torrents/streams. And it being a draft-N router in a small dorm room you should be hitting 300mbs provided you have a draft-N adapter. Also any PC that is hardwired into can get up to 1000mbs so large file transfers go quickly.

I agree with Aawa, but I have a lower end model, the DLink DIR-615. Draft N, no gigabit lan....It is rock solid though, and not expensive at all

it fit my college budget!!

How does the USB Port work? What can you use it for?

The one downside of the DIR655/DIR625 is that they are not supported (yet) by 3rd party firmware. With that you could turn your little router into a mini-pc running a stripped linux build. The possibilities from there are almost limitless. I run a web server, an FTP ser, a VPN server and a bandwidth monitoring service on a router less powerful than the suggested DLink. The router I'm running all that from is an Asus WL-500g Premium v1. I'm also using the bugger as a netwrk storage and network printing station for two printers.

I am strongly against the WRT54GL from Linksys. That device was awesome a while ago but today it is practically ancient. It's about the same price as the Asus I mentioned above and also about 20-40% slower (AND it has no USB, AND it can't handle extended storage). If you want Linksys, see about a WRT310N or a WRT350N.

If you only want a router (no 3rd party firmware fancy stuff), you'll find that the router throughput performance charts at SmallNetBuilder.com come in really handy when choosing a good cheap router. Simply look at some routers in your price range and compare the throughput results from the linked table. Once you have a candidate, look for reviews on the site I linked you to - should be one there if it's a good price/performance router. Then decide

Despite what is being said about the WRT54GL,I recommend it. Flashed it with dd-wrt and it becomes a great router.WRT350N would be my second recommendation.

Well thanks for all your help guys. I think I'm just going to with the Apple Airport Express. All your suggestions were excellent, but for my needs the Airport better suits me. I really needed it to be able to hook up to a Printer or a hard drive. Also, the "Air Tunes" feature is a great bonus.

However, I will keep these all in mind because my parents will soon need a new router for our house and these are all great routers!

That's literally ancient. Add another $10 and buy a next-gen router that outperforms it and has USB!

I'm doing that with an Asus WL-500g Premium. And it even works without a firmware mod! Don't think I spend more than $70 on it either. Your call though.
