Ati ccc

Do we really need the Catalyst Control Center?; i've got 2 Sapphire HD 4850 in CrossFireX (Asus P5Q E) and everytime the new CCC comes out i think if i should or shouldn't update, i like keeping up to date, but every single time my update fails, i'm always afraid of this new updates, and of course, always fails and i end up reinstalling Vista(Home Premium 32bits), this is how i usually update:
1st i just try by downloading the update and fails, almost all the time end up with a blue screen, and the time it finish, always finish with errors, it says "intallation finish with errors, read error report"
2nd after all that, i go into safe mode, unistall everything ATI with Your Unistaller 2008 Pro, when that's done i use CCleaner, then i check the start menu and the Programs Files Folder in my hard drive and erase everything ATI, then i use Driver Cleaner Pro, after that i reboot and go to safe mode again and do the same all over again, the second time i ussually find a couple of foldres or file or things that shouldn't be there and get rid of them, and also go to device manager and unistall the graphics driver(both, one for each GPU), hen reboot again and go to the OS normally
3rd once there i let windows isntal the VGA adapter and the video drivers after that windows ask for a reboot, i reboot and go back to the OS normally, once there i run CCleaner, then the defrag utility, then check for updates, if any i install it, if not i just reboot again, then when back to the OS, i go to ATI page download and do an express install, and fails, only after i reinstall the OS it will work properly and thats why i wonder, DO WE REALLY NEED THE CCC?

You need it to enable/disable crossfire. Otherwise, no. I don't currently have it installed. Technically iirc, you don't need ccc if you use ati tray tools (has the cf enable/disable option too).

EDIT--and if you're talking about the 8.12 version, I maintain that it's a crap release (started a rant about it). Installation of the 8.12's was the biggest pain in the butt, and then, after they finally got installed right, my overall performance dropped. So...catalyst is not necessary, only the display driver.

How did you enable it? (or how do you disable it for games that it disagrees with?). Interesting...

I see. i guess it's enabled by default? Well, I'd say you have a couple options. Just go without ccc and see what happens (I mean, if you never have to disable crossfire, then it doesn't matter). Or you could get ahold of a version of ati tray tools that supports the 4850x2--i think there might be a beta version that supports them, and also in cfx as well, but since I don't have the luck of having them, I can't say for certain. I think it's around the 1.5.8 or 1.6-ish versions. I really liked ATT, but alas, my 4670 is seldom supported properly...
