Overclocking problem

Thread Starter
My specs are

Asus M3A-H/HDMI
Diamond HD 4870 512MB GDDR5
Crucial ballistix 2x1gb pc2-6400 ddr2-800
320gb hitachi 16mb cache HD
AMD phenom 9600

My problem is that if i try to overclock the cpu or my gpu even by a little bit my system crashes and it is not the temperature because temperate is pretty cool. I also would like to know whats the safe voltage to increase on the cpu without frying it. Any help is appreciated, thanks "First post"

These Phenoms are very hard to overclock, try by increasing the CPU voltage and NB voltage (Northbridge) before increasing a RAM voltage at all. CPU voltage below 1.45V to be on the safe side.

Welcome to OCN!

I personally do not have a phenom but i'll see what i can do to help.

How are you OCing it? im assuming your using the bios. i would start off by finding your limit of your mobo first, as Biatch basically said. Just inch it up a little at a time and check stability. If you try to make big jumps at a time you may find difficulty in finding a stable setting.

Good Luck!

sounds like your overclocking everything at the same time like ike said test your motherboard first... but actually the very first thing to do is read the guide how to overclock... maximizing mobo by lowering cpu clock and memory speed then check for your max fsb... i was using orthos before but ill suggest OCCT it detects error faster... for your gpu problem i dont see a reason to overclock your gpu since its kinda hard to overclock due to its DDR rate... if im correct every DDR speed that you see is 5x of its actual speed like me i have a 1900 mhz memory clock but i can only see 950 in my precision because its DDR2 950x2 = 1900 it took me sometime but thanks logan and thinker i manage to over clock

depends on what your cooling with. My 9850 OC'd to 3.2 (stock 2.5) at 1.48v ran about 40 idle (that was with the cool n quite enabled) now im h2o and i idle around 29-32. Agreed that Phenoms arent the best OCrs... i'm having issues getting mine over 3.2 were most are getting around 3.4-3.6 When OCing these though, always have your NB and CPU voltage match. Your 4870 shouldnt be a problem to OC, my 4850 OC'd core 700 mem 1150.

actually my 4870 is having huge problems overclocking. I oc the core by 10 mhz and memory by like less than 100 and when i play cod4 it locks up. Anyways what cooling would you recommend for the phenom 9600 because i am currently running on stock. I appreciate everyone's help, thanks
