Agreed that Phenoms arent the best OCrs... i'm having issues getting mine over 3.2 were most are getting around 3.4-3.6 When OCing these though, always have your NB and CPU voltage match. Your 4870 shouldnt be a problem to OC, my 4850 OC'd core 700 mem 1150.
Could you explain the nb and cpu voltage part a little bit more because i am using AMD over drive and i upped the CPU voltage to 1.275 and i see two NB voltages one that is NB core and one that is NB PCIe. Which one should be the same as the cpu voltage?

NB core is what you want. Avoid over drive. its crap. OCing via software is crap no matter what the program is. You always want to OC through your bios. Type of cooling depends really. I have everything liquid cooled. I OC everything and i like to keep my stuff cool. Air isnt too bad if you dont plan on doing much OCing. One thing (and the only thing really) i dont like about ATIs video cards is they run HOT. YOUR issue with cod4 crashing is due to heat. Do you have the fan turned up to 65%? Are you running the NEWEST catalyst drivers? if you just have the drivers from the cd, ditch them and d/l the newest. Then before you do ANY OCing on that card turn the fan up to 65%. its a little noisey but it will cool that card right down, and allow you to do more OCing AND stay stable.

stupid question but im gonna ask it anyway... are you hooked up to the onboard video or the 4870? Is the onboard vid card disabled in the bios?

make sure its disabled. may not be causin but it could be... anytime you got onboard video and you are using an add-on card ALWAYS make sure to disable the onboard so there arent any conflicts

Ok i tried overclocking in the bios but it was a total failure. Any bit of OC and my windows wouldnt start. Seems like amd overdrive works better for some reason

awww dunno much about your quad but try increasing your fsb by 2 or 4 and uninstall overdrive i mean ive been doing alot with my pc too to squeeze out every single bit of power and trying to rule out parts while testing... did you use memtest to check your ram first?
