The Asus Republic Of Gamers Series Motherboard Club - Page 26

Hello all,

Just joined these forums. I have the following build, and was wondering if I'd see any significant upgrade in changing my CPU to a Q9650.

CPU: E8500 under an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
GPU: XFX Radeon 4890
RAM: Corsair DDR2 (not sure of the speed)
OS: Windows Vista SP1
HDD: WD Caviar Green 500gb.
PSU: Silverstone Strider 750w.
Case: CM 690.

Basically, I'm satisfied with the speed of my machine overall, but I get irritated with the slow load times on games and slow boot time. I believe these slow boot speeds are HDD related, since my drive is a "green." Nonetheless, any excuse to jack my rig up is always welcome. ;-)

Moreover, of late, my CPU fan has been seemingly stuck at 100% load - around 2600 rpm. It's loud and annoying as all hell. I previously had a BFG 8800 GT OC and the system simply didn't seem as loud with that card in. I've had Speedfan installed for as long as I've had this system.

I know it's the CPU fan, as I've turned down the RPM on the fan with Speedfan and it is clearly the CPU that's the culprit. I don't want the damn CPU Fan to be on load the whole time, I want it to adjust on it's own. I feel like it used to, but I can't say I noticed either way. What am I doing wrong? I have the full chipset software installed. Any tips?

You're right. As you said, the boot up time of the OS and the load time of games are greatly affected my HDDs and RAM. So if you want really fast boot times, you should look into getting faster HDDs like the Velociraptors/SAS drives/SSDs and put them in RAID0.

What CPU cooler are you using? Maybe you should consider watercooling for a more quiet rig. Or maybe get a better/bigger cooler.

You will see a significant upgrade changing from E8500 to Q9650, but I dont think it will improve your boot/load times.

Hey guys just ordered my ASUS Rampage II Gene motherboard yesterday from mWave.com. Should be here on Friday 19, 2009. Can't wait to put that in with my new Thermaltake Ultra 120 Extreme. Should be able to get some mean overclocks with the 920.

I will post pics so I can join the club, once everything is up and running.
