Which HDMI cables?

Thread Starter
So I just got my new 42' LG Scarlet HDTV and I need some HDMI cables. I am looking at meritline.com and I see a bunch that are 6 ft. for around $8-10. Now when I look at the ones from the Best Buy website, they are A LOT MORE. Why is this one $40 and this one only $8?
Can any one please explain why this is?
Thanks in advance.

Because best buy rips you off.

HDMI cables are HDMI cables. I've used name brand, and crap brand, they all do the same thing.

That's what I figured. Thanks for shedding some light on that

This is very true. I've seen some Monster 1000HD HDMI cables at BestBuy for over $100 and they do the EXACT same thing as my 10$ HDMI cables that I got off Newegg. It's a complete ripoff.

Yeah, basically all those darn expensive ones are just for two unnecessary bragging rights of equal proportions: of how rich you are, and how badly you got ripped off.

You want to be certified HDMI 1.3a or 1.3b cables. The certified HDMI cables are made to handle certain bandwidths and throughputs.

More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-De...rface#Versions

Also, check out hdmi.org

1.3a Category II cables will pull up to something like 1600p and above so they will literally be the last cables you buy for a long long time.

This is what u want. They are not all the same.... the 1.3's are supposed to better than the older 1.1's. If you dont care about quality then just get the cheapest.

Well, the forty dollar cable costs more so it must be better. Manufacturers and retailers take advantage of the public's general ignorance of electronics. There are only three other possibilities I can think of for the expensive price tag.

The first is that they use shielded cable to prevent electromagnetic interference and the subsequent signal degeneration. There is almost no signal degeneration of HDMI over a distance of less than 6 feet. This is in part due to the square shape (either + or - no "in between") of the signal versus the sine wave of an analog signal.

The second reason is that they use a larger gauge wire. once again, this is pointless. The larger wire reduces signal db drop caused by increased resistance (longer and smaller wires have increased resistance, while shorter and larger wires have less resistance). The longer the run the greater the db drop, so a larger wire is used. Once again for a short cable db drop is very little.

The third reason I can think of but can't prove is licensing. To make an "officially sanctioned" HDMI cable probably requires paying a fee which is then passed on to the consumer. I have no proof of this fact.

Check out this article on CNET.

If you only need a short cable to go from your computer or DVD player to a monitor or TV, buy the cheap cable and save yourself the money. You will not likely notice any difference.
