Benefits of upgrading cpu?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone

For some odd reason, my 4830 isnt on par with the ones on the benchmarks and gets MERKED by weaker cards like a 9600gt.

In UT3 with max settings 1440x900 I get about 30 fps avg in combat, no kidding.

So, if I upgrade my cpu ( maybe a phenom ii quad 920?) what benefits will i get?

Thanks

Benchmarks typically favor Intel chips. If your gameplay is solid and the card does what you want, then I would leave well enough alone. But it appears you are not too happy with it.

If you do decide to upgrade to a quad, you may not notice much improvement due to poor utilization of multi-core processors in games. Games are STARTING to get better at using all the cores, but it has been a slow process. But overall, you would still notice an improvement with a Phenom II.

I would try some different drivers personally. 30fps @ 1440x900 is kinda weak for that card.

I used to get 130 FPS on CS:S with an amd 3600 @ 3.0ghz and a x1950xt, when I switched to a e6750 @stock I got an average of 190 fps; I don't know if that's the case with UT3 since CS:S is more CPU dependent than GPU.

4830 should be better than 9600GT but really depending on the game. Here is a link to show the different in UT3.

That 4800+ is single core, right? A new CPU would help you a lot.

Always see if there is an alternative to spending money. Maybe you could overclock the GPU. There are an array of programs on-line for this purpose.

Also check what tasks you have running on startup. Ccleaner will manage your startup. - Processes running while a game is can take a lot of CPU cycles and RAM.

same argument, depends how CPU bound the game is. But considering you are playing at lower resolutions, the CPU would improve your minimum FPS
