oc advise for beginners

Thread Starter
i am totally a beginner and have no clue about overclocking. i always have the impression that overclocking may reduce the lifespan of the cards... nevermind, i would like to overclock my system which has: intel extreme qx9650, asus rampage formula, asus gtx280, windows vista, 2x2g ogz ram. can someone guide my step by step ( ) what i need to change in the bios in order to have a much better system? thanks beforehand

Here, read this

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...c2d-duals.html

It's more useful to you in the long term to read some guides and become familiar with the nuances of OCing yourself than have one of us give you settings for your MB.

One of those, give a man a fish teach a man to fish ideas imo.

Everyone pretty much does it the same way...however its mostly trial and error. Nobody can just give you settings. It would be much easier that way but its just not the way it works. Even if you have 2 identical rigs they will OC different.

The best thing to do is to hang out here with us and read other peoples OC threads...also get in your bios and study it. Open up that link that tells you what all your bios features are and see what features you have in your bios. You can start by buying an after market cooler if you don't already have one...this will help you feel more confident when the time comes to OC. It will take you a while to read up on enough stuff that you feel like you can jump in and do it without a melt down. Don't get frustrated with all the lingo...its 90% reading and understanding the lingo. It comes with time. Let me tell you though...it is worth the work when you get a full gig overclock out of your chip.

I'm relatively new to overclocking also. My only advice is take it slow. Look around and get an idea of what your board and cpu should be able to do, and then start on the low side of those settings and move up in small increments. If you're truly worried, try picking up a cheap low end processor and practice on it until you're comfortable.

Don't worry too much about breaking stuff. A lot of the gear these days has better survival instincts than most of the people I know...

I suggest you read everything you can about OCing. Find out the risks involved so you can learn to avoid them. Research the boundaries of your hardware so you know how far is too far and what could be dangerous.

Ask specific questions when you have them, but otherwise just search and read guides on how to do it.
