He should not have apologized. And this woman is a complete idiot, and she desserves to be treated as one.

linux is cool if you work in a server environment, or have no sex-life, but for the rest of us, windows is at least as good. or OSX if you hate yourself.
Not to start any fights, but I'd like your thoughts about how you feel about all those 'other' OS's if Microsoft opened up DirectX to the public.

Linux/MacOS playing DirectX games, and free? It would probably be the one thing that could crush that company.

[edit] I think that parts of the story have not been told. He should not have apologized.

True, Billy Joe the farmer doesn't need Linux but you get the idea.
Actually, Billy Joe the farmer can benefit more from a free Linux distro than spending on a Windows license. Unless he plays Windows games of course.

Yes. the diffs between windows and Linux are negligible for everyday home use of internet and e-mail.

Honestly, if I was the dean of that school, I'd make her take some classes or something, if not outright fire her.
funny... I had a high school biology teacher that was overly religious...

Learning Windows is inevitable... we don't need our public school system to teach us how to use Microsoft's operating systems.

Microsoft has such a complete lack of regard for open standards, it's dumbfounding. Plus - what basic computer skills can you gain from Windows that you can't gain from Linux? And which of these skills will actually apply to any future Windows releases? I guess we can always count on the Start button...

Most people are turned away from Linux simply because they don't want to be challenged. Isn't it the job of our educational system to challenge the children anyway?

Wow, I assumed the whole letter was a joke, like that "computer hacker" one from a while back. Guess not.

Even Microsoft gives out free software to students. As a teacher she should know that.

I agree with everyone saying he shouldnt have apologized. She was wrong in a HUGE way, and he gave a strongly worded response back to correct her blindingly ignorant statements. The ONLY thing I would see worth apologizing for is the fact that he posted it publicly. I could understand if his apology went along the lines of "Sorry I posted your letter on a public forum for the internet to see." As far as apologies go, thats all she deserved, and probably not even that. If this were a non-web based company for instance, and a letter to a CEO or whatnot from a private citizen got published, the media would make a stink about it. Its just unprofessional. As far as the content of his letter to her goes, no apology was necessary.
