E6550 help

Thread Starter
So i just upgraded my hp workstation to use as a gaming rig, the hardware is as follows.

E6550 @ 2.33Ghz
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R
OCZ HPC Reaper ddr2 1066
EVGA GTX 260 core 216 superclocked

ive done alot of reading and expirmented a little overclocking but im still unsure what i should be doing to optimize my system. like tight memory timing vs high clock, and how to achieve a 1 to 1 ratio and if its worth it, or if its better to have a high multiplier or fsb. basically im a noob looking for help finding the optimal overclocking settings. ie. what would you do?

thanks for the help/input,
Matt

ive basically got a good grasp on overclocking and how to go about doing it, but i still unsure where i should be trying to go. if you had this system what would you set as you goal for an efficient mild overclock?

Anything above 3 ghz would be considered good. Try to get around 3.5 and that would be great. I'm trying to get there but i am stuck at 3.2 for now.

A higher clock is always better than tighter timings of a lower clock. You want to shoot for anything you can get over 3.0GHz...after you get into the 3.0-4.0 range, everything looks the same. You achieve a 1:1 ratio with your CPU and RAM by choosing a divider that makes your RAM run at twice the speed of your FSB i.e. 800MHz when your FSB is at 400 (meaning your CPU would be at 3.2GHz for 400 x 8). Most RAM is bad at OC'ing past 200MHz or so above stock, so it's usually better to get to a 1:1 ratio with as high of a multiplier you can use and just work on the CPU. If the RAM is running understock when your CPU is stable at a satisfactory speed, then you can start to tighten timings. Good luck!

ok so my max multiplier is 7x and my rams stock speed is 1066. so my best bet would to be to run at 400-500mhz fsb and underclock the ram to 800-1000 (and tighten the timings) for a 1:1 ratio? also is a 500mhz fsb alot of stress for a system that will be used around 16 hours a day?

Yea pretty much,
I suggest a 450FSB to start off with check for stability on that(Using Prime 95, OCCT tools like that.)
If that goes good then go up in 10s(on the FSB and repeat each step the go down till you get your most stable overclock and then mess with your voltages if you want to get any higher.

Hope I helped.

Yours sincerely,
