folding with gpu

can folding on a gpu cause the gpu to fail? i've read of at least one case and i just bought a gtx 280 for folding but i dont want to kill it while folding

i think it would deffo shorted the life of your gpu

It would shorten the life a bit, but get a good aftermarket GPU heatsink and you'll be fine.

So long as heat is controlled, it will should have minimal effect on it.
It may cause one that was going to fail to fail sooner though (hopefully within the warranty period).
