Which would be better - New CPU or GPU?

Thread Starter
I am wondering which would be more beneficial for me for an upgrade, a new CPU or GPU?

I use my computer mainly as a HTPC but I do play alot of the newest games on it. So I am wondering what would give me the best bang for my buck as far as in game fps is concerned?

I am currently running a C2D E4600 overclocked to 3.24Ghz and a Pailt 8800GT at 720/1600/900

Unfortunately I am using a mATX board so SLI is out of the question for me.

depends on the budget?

personally, id grab a new CPU first, then when the timings right (sufficient funds) id pick up a new video card.

Well, right now Im playing the new Prince of Persia and Grid. I play both of them at 1920x1080 (1080p)

I have no problems maxing out everything in Pirnce of Persia, inclusing AA. With Grid I can max out everything except I have to keep the MSAA quite low at 2x

Something like a Q6600 and a 4870/GTX260 would suit that res nicely.

If I was to get just one, either a CPU or GPU which would make the most difference?

Cost really isn't that much of an issue but I will put a budget of about $400.

I was looking at an E8400, Q7600 or a radeon 4870

An E8400 and Radeon HD4870 will set you back about $400, so I'd suggest upgrading both at once.
