Is it expensive to run pc 24/7?

Thread Starter
just wondering if its expensive to run a pc for 24 hours a day, 7 days week? majority of the time it would just be folding and uploading as such, but like would it really add hundreds to my electric bill if i left my pc on all the time?

any thoughts? or anyone know of any programsm that measure how much energy your pc is using?

it wont do effect you bill as much as you think, there will be a increase of course but nothing spectacular.

Program, no but a P3 Kill-a-watt will let you monitor power consumption at a specific instant, and power consumption over time.

As far as hundreds, it won't be that drastic. Maybe an extra 10-20 a month depending on what you have running along with your computer, be it computer speakers, a receiver, etc.

But, it will be noticed on your energy bill. There is no program that will do what you speak, but there is hardware you can buy to determine how much an electrical component is pulling from an outlet.

I personally do not like to run mine 24/7 just because there is really no need to. Plus, dust accumulates on the inside much quicker the more your computer is used. That is just me though, I have friends that run multiple computers 24/7 for gaming servers and such.

Alright, from your rig, I am not even going to use the Antec PSU Calculator, but let's say you idle @ 140W. I presume folding can be considered "idle" cept a little ram usage, anyways, say you play with your comp for 8 hours a day, load probably around, let's just say 250W since you aren't gaming.

In Canada, electricity rates are about 6-7 cent KWH, but with delivery fees, tax, crap etc it goes for around 11ish cents KWH. Let just say for me to do what you're doing, it would cost you 47 cents to do 247, which equates to $14~15 dollars (price in Canadian) a month. I can't find the rate for UK (but I think everything is more expensive there), but that's what you show expect, at least.

To measure energy consumption, the best is to use those wattage measuring device that sits right at the outlet (you have to plug them in).

Folding is hardly idle It puts a 100% load on the CPU and a high load on the GPU as well if he is running the FAH GPU2 client

Power Consumption * .072 = Monthy Cost of PC

This assumes it is running 24/7 at constant load and the price of electricity is $.10 per Kw/hr.

24hr * 30 days / 1000w * $.10 = .072
Once again...

well, i just did that as a reference. If he is hardcore folding then just take the Rig Wattage x Hours of Use x Kilowatt hour (the rate). 247 100% CPU and GPU load can be bloody for your pocket
