E8400 just got here... and uhh? - Page 2

Some of the later steppings are quite good and you may get 4ghz under 1.2V (my previous one did 4140mhz at 1.168V )...I have not tried on my current chip.

Anyway my point is that it may not require much voltage for high clocks therefore you may get good temps on teh stock cooler.

i was unaware E8400's could run at stock. you might have to just OC it at least a bit.

The e8400 is a great chip, I currently have mine running at 3.84 MHz rock solid. That is:
Multiplier x 8
Bus speed 480 MHz
FSB 1920

Mine is a C0 stepping. If you want a decent cooler on the cheap, check out the one in my sig, the Masscool 8WA741. It keeps my chip below 40 degrees at all times and can be had for around $24.99 or so. It's a nice little cooler with good performance. Of course there are better out there, but you'll pay for them as well.

CPU-Z will tell you what type of stepping in the revision box. It's one of my many listed "must have" programs.

Grats on your new system!

The E8400 is a fun chip to play around with. Kudos to getting an E0 revision. With a decent cooler you can probably break 4.0 GHz without much issue.

You won't kill it on stock as long as you pay attention to temps. It's just that stock cooling will limit your clocks because it can't deal with the heat.

yeah, unfortunately C0 chips require a bit more voltage...although they certainly are not bad clockers.

Still, I've had really good C0 chips and they only did 4.4 with coaxing, my current E0 does 4.6ghz stable on 1.400V actual
