[NHW] RV740 taped out

AMD has successfully taped out its first chip on the 40nm node. The chip is no less than the mid-range chip RV740 meant to succeed the RV730. Any changes in the specifications remains clouded at this time, but we will of course keep digging for them. RV740 is the guinea pig and what AMD learns from it will be used to make RV870, the chip also known as Lil' Dragon, even better. Stay tuned for more information on both. In the mean time we advice you not to expect that much from chips such as "RV775", "RV790" or any other similar names that might appear...

AMD should use less energy on being first for smaller die sizes and more energy on improving the quality of their processors. =\\

this is for GPU, they are already good in this aspect that is why they are moving on to the smaller node, also its cheaper to manufacture.

Even though ati is now a part of amd, I am sure they still(for the most part) operate on their own.

Besides any experience their graphics division learns from the lower process can be used for processors later on, but then again, it would make more sense to go from 45nm to 32nm than 45-50.

Actually the knowledge from ATI die shrinks doesn't translate to AMD at all.

The graphic chips are using a half-node process, are being produced at another company (TSMC vs the AMD foundry), and I'm pretty sure the fabbing process is different too, as TSMC won't have hi-k until 32nm.

Yeh but AMD is getting rid of all their foundries.
