Is it RMA time or what?

Thread Starter
i have had issues with my pc freezing up while playing games. sometimes it is ok for a bit but then it just freezes up a lot. to the point where i have to reboot. i have done memtest, installed new chipset drivers, used driver cleaner and used only the drivers and not CCC. My rig is not overclocked, it is running at stock speeds til i get this sorted out. i dunno what to do, seems like only thing left to do is rma my card. any experiences with this before, anyone? i dont wanna RMA a card if it not needed. but if it is, then i guess it time to call new egg it bothers me how it only does during games and never any other time.

It may be your MOBO as well.

To test that, even though you're not overclocked, run Prime95 in Blend mode, where it will usesthe CPU and lots of RAM. Since you say your RAM is ok and you get errors/crashes, then it may definetly be your MOBO (northbridge) giving out. I had same problem with my 680i, where the computer crashed with my games, apps or if it sat there idle for a while.

I RMA'd the MOBO and got an upgrade to 780i. I overclocked the 780i and been stable for three months no prob. It was not my video card, CPU, RAM or PSU, it was the MOBO.

Do you have any other working computers with a PCI Express x16 slot and a high enough watt PSU to handle a HD4870? If you do you could try it in that computer and either rule out the HD4870 as your problem or find your problem? How are the temperatures on your HD4870? Could it be over heating? Have you tried scanning your hard drive with virus detection software?
