GTX 260, Upgrade to Q6600? Bottleneck X2-6000+?

post #1 of 6

Hi, Ive recently bought a GTX260 because GTA IV was lagging. But its still lagging and only playable reasonable on the lowest settings possible (1680x1050) and the rest on low, and all the view distances on 1.

If i would upgrade toward a Q6600 and some new memory, like extra 2 GB 800Mhz would this increase my performance this much i could run it at medium/high?

Specifications:

Coolermaster 700W.
AMD 6000+ X2
GTX 260 Evga
3 GB DDRII 533 Mhz.
Asus M2N Sli-deluxe.

3dmark06 Score: 11075. ----> With upgrade? 17000-19000 3dmark06?

Thanks!

a nice 750i or 780i and a q6600 will do wonders for your FPS.

Hm, ok that sounds ok. But a "I" board is quite expensive. Would a Asus P5 or something that costs around 100-120 euro would give me the same performance as a I750 or something?

I'm in almost the exact same situation....except I've got a 5000+...upgraded the video card but didn't THAT much of an improvement. My 3dmark06 was also around 11k and I am pretty convinced that my CPU+mobo is a HUGE bottleneck because I've seen 15k scores with older 9800/8800 cards running on 'better' CPUs (E8400/E8500)

But I'm not sure if there is such a huge difference between dual and quad cores, though. GTAIV apparently is the first game to actually use quad core but I may just stick to dual core for now....

The only reason to go for a 750i or 780i motherboard is for SLI. An Asus or Gigabyte P45 paired with a Q6600 and a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 should be good for around 3.4GHZ or so, and would be a great upgrade to your setup. If you go Asus, you should get the P5Q-E or the P5Q Deluxe. If you go Gigabyte, go for the GA-EP45-UD3P, which is an insane overclocker, and frankly the best P45 and sub-$300 motherboard available
