HDDerase: Working w/USB External?

Thread Starter
Hello all, I've finally gotten HDDerase to boot etc... but when I finally get to the screen where it detects drives, I see nothing at all cept P0/P1: NONE. It's not detecting my attached USB adapted drive. I've got about 20 drives I need to wipe and heard this prog was much faster than the standard DBAN/Active Kill etc... Has anyone gotten this working with USB attached drives?

Thanks.

I know about Act-Kill, but according to the papers from HDD's site, it's way slower and multiple passes are not *really* effective enough to warrant all the time they require(?); I'm not claiming it, I'm just asking afaik about DoD-5220 and the ridiculous Gutman 35 pass = if you gotta go through all of that, take the drive, set it down, put safety goggles on, lift up hammer, slam down a couple times and let kinetic-transfer of energy save you hours of wiping lol.

I wish I could get this working for USB: it's VERY impractical to apply this software for say recylcing days where I've got 20+ pulled drives sitting here needing to be wiped on a machine that's going to be dedicated for that sole task... connecting and disconnecting drives to the internal cables= extra wear and tear on the PSU connectors, and increased risk something will get damaged Vs attach USB adapter, plug in... WIPE... detach. *new drive* reattach.... et cetera.

Thx 4 the reply

You can't secure erase an external drive connected via USB since the command set doesn't support it. You have to either put it in an eSATA enclosure or mount it internally.

NOooooo! Dang it, what an oversight; how could they negate a highly convenient function like that?! I was going to use one of these mini-dell POS's to do it and it only supports SATA... maybe I could use an SATA adapter, now where is it?!

Thx though!

Yep I discovered this shortcoming of USB myself a while back. Fortunately I had a usable IDE port.

Geesh it's oversights like this that REALLY make or break a program and it's author's potential publicity; here I am with THIRTY HDs waiting to be wiped, the temp staff we have wastes time just sitting over them and baby sitting it Vs me finding this little known about ap, hot-plugging in USB adapter and BOOM! HD in - HD out! Writing up a nice email to the IT staff about it and the increase productivity it has now unlocked...receiving a merit on my list of accomplishments for my promo-interview coming up..

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOO THANKS 4 Nothing. Geesh, back to finding other ways of getting IT-merits!

hehehe. You can complain to the USB Implementors Forum for leaving this feature out of the USB Mass Storage class. Of course since USB was designed when Windows 3.1 and 95 were still Microsoft's consumer operating systems, and hard drives didn't HAVE built-in secure erase features, I can understand the oversight. Then again USB Mass Storage is meant to be generic, and probably intentionally doesn't support such advanced features.

P.S. I have a related article I wrote for a well-known magazine which should be published soon. Once it hits the newsstands I will be making a nice thread about it.

Excellent! Thanks for the insight/reply... Still annoys me, as if the coder himself wouldn't want to enjoy the feature? Lol
