DDR2 Intel Socket 775 Mobo//CPU to keep me happy for a while

Hi all,

I'm on my 6th build and just a bit stuck on rounding out this build, have all parts except CPU and Motherboard. Have a Corsair Dominator 4gb 1066 kit which I would like to use, have a BFG GTX 260 core 216 and a BFG 8800GT both of which need to end up in this rig planning on multi card CUDA Physx/ Rendering. Have been looking at Q9400,Q9450,Q9550 clearly the 9550 is the primo option but I would only like to reach between 3.2 and 3.5ghz on air with a Zalman 9700CNPS. I was almost assuredly going to get the EVGA 780i FTW board but just couldnt pull the trigger without some outside consult.

Any questions, comments, or tips would be much appreciated...

Thanks,
Obs

Get this mb imo, it's almost renowned now for it's capabilities, especially with quads.

I would like to keep the dual 16x pcie, I would just rather have the expandability later on in case can get my hands on another GTX 260 cheap, I would like to maximize my budget of roughly 600 for mobo and cpu and Im not excessively overclocking it because I will inevitably be moving to the new chipset in a few years. Until then id like to get a mobo with significant expandability over oc potential, I would also lean toward nVidia chipsets

Thanks,

THe UD3P has 2 PCI-e x16 slots. If your running the cards unlinked/not in SLI then you can use this board.

I realize it has 2 x16 length slots, according to newegg its 1 (x16 and x8), will the the x8 impact an addition of a second GTX 260? this rig is entirely green themed and id lean toward a black pcb but clearly not a huge deal. Ive also never dealt with gigabyte before, only ASUS and EVGA both of which I love but EVGA definitely wins in the tech support dept.

Thanks,

Man dual core, hadnt even crossed my mind, to be honest. What are the advantages and disadvantages? I guess now that i think about it I just jumped on the quad bandwagon however enticing duo may be quad just sounds so much better to me. How would say that E8500 oc'd to 4.5ghz and a Q9550 at 3.5ghz compare?

Thanks,

I can't knock you there! Evga is top dog in the service department! Their service alone is a good enough reason to buy Nvidia. If my budget was not at $100 for my last board I would more then likely have a Evga 750i FTW.

x8 PCI-e slots don't have any issues running any single GPU card. 4850x2 ,4870x2, 9800 GTX2 would take a bit of a performance hit running on a x8 slot.

A E8500 at 4.5Ghz will out perform a a quad at 3.5Ghz all day long. That said quads do have some benefits in some departments.

Well from what I can tell you want to use this for some high end gaming. A quad core would serve you well but as it stands games are barely optimized for dual cores let alone a quad core.

The higher clock speeds of the dual core would serve you better for single threaded apps. Unless you are regularly using multi thread apps (encoding video and such) I would lean towards the higher clocks of the dual cores. You could probably oc the quad to the stock speeds of the dual core but then again the dual core could be clocked even higher.

Just something to think about.

Thanks alot guys, I will in fact be doing some video encoding and decoding but most of that is saved for my Quad G5, Although this computer will be used for games I would really prefer it to be a quick multitasking machine ie having alot of things going on at once, from what Ive read the quad would help with that but does it out weigh the clock speeds of a dual? How will the software be evolving in the future? Will developers start focusing on quad core optimization. I have been working on a grant with some fellow students to build a 6 node PS3 cluster and have done some reading up on parallel programming but have no real idea how software manufacturers are spliting up tasks in the programs we use today.

Thanks,
Obs
