Good HDD Security and Encryption software for external Drive?

Thread Starter
My dad just got an external 1TB WD hard drive and I've been tasked w/ partitioning it up for all of us and getting it set up for use.

I don't care about my partition being encrypted or not, but his stuff has quite a bit of importance. I need a program I can put on the drive to encrypt his 2 partitions and secure their access w/ at least a password.

If there's a way to do this in Windows(I'm on Vista x64, he's on XP pro), easily, and I'm just t3h u83r n00b here, feel free to point that out to me

Oh, a lil offtopic but something else you can help me w/:
I've got 4 partitions on it, all 232.88GB, all NTFS, and named W, X, Y, and Z drives. Problem is that Z: drive shows up in disk management as a logical, rather than primary partition. I don't exactly know the difference between a primary and logical partition, so... Is there any way to change it to a primary partition, will this to be of any problem being a logical rather than pri. for my purpose, and, WTeff is a logical partition vs. a primary partition anyway?! lol.

keep it coming and any suggestion/instructions on truecrypt would also be appreciated. However, the program looks pretty straightforward so far...

A hard drive can only have three primary partitions. I don't know exactly why, nor do I know the difference between primary and logical partitions (other than primary partitions are bootable, while logical are not).

As for the encryption, TrueCrypt is an excellent choice.

I've used truecrpyt a handful of times and definitely recommend it. Lots of options and very user friendly.
