However, I think that is extremely annoying...... some of us like myself play a game for a while and are then done with it. Sure the game was worth it, but I prefer selling my game to put it towards other games, etc. EA is widely known for such things for their games and to be honest I do buy many games with the intention that I may sell or give it away in the future. This game is good enough to bite the permanent bullet for though.

(edit): Is this the way every STEAM game works that is purchased at the store? Secondly if I ever lose the physical copy can I download the game for free given it is permanently linked to my STEAM account?

Yes, you can. The wonderful thing about it being tied to your Steam account is that you don't need that pesky disc. You could completely destroy that disc and then reinstall L4D afterwards. I love it!

Welcome to digital distribution Best DRM you think of, and it works great~ish. Not only do they prevent piracy with Steam (mostly), they prevent resales which in turn make them more money if the other person buys the game instead. I myself don't resell my games so this doesn't bother me, but I can see how it would annoy others who only play to beat a game then sell it to make back some of the cost.

In the end I think its worth it, you get an awesome game distribution system, I have yet to have Steam's DRM prevent me from enjoying any of my games. As far as PC's are concerned, I consider it a good start to rivaling XBL.

Good start? XBL can't hold a candle to Steam. Steam, for starters is free. You don't need to pay one cent to enjoy Steam. Secondly, you need not worry about your device of access suddenly accidentally itself...

Pretty much, I guess the money you pay for the game is pretty much for the "privledge" to play the game, not to actually own the code.
the discs do contain game data but it links the activation code to you account, i know this because when i install L4D from disc im up and running in about 10-15mins and steam just dls the patches but installing from with no disc takes 4-5 hours as i have to dl all the game data and patches

i guess basically you are just buying the key, can i get like another retail game that is also available on steam and then merge the key into steam so i dont have to load the disc? i gotta find this out lol

Ok.. I'll stand corrected...

I just know that I still had to download some files from STEAM to make the game work... and that it didn't operated in a "standalone" mode prior to setting up the STEAM account.

Thread Starter
Well,.... as good as Steam is against Piracy just like a lot of other digitally distributed content (XBL, Apple, etc.)... it still feels kind of odd knowing my hard copy of my game can never be given as a gift to anyone for them to try, own, etc... I know the key is linked to your account so you could still sell the game if you wanted, but you would have to give the account as well........ I suppose a lot of MMO's are like this as well and some other games like EA's games, but it still kind of stinks even though I know the main reason is piracy and further ease of use......

I would say I purchase more games new than not, but I do occasionally look for "mint condition" games for my PC and consoles so I don't have to invest the whole farm in knowing whether I enjoy the game and can get some value back when I am done with the game. If consoles ever did this beyond digital content distribution (which I know they considered) then it would literally kill most places like GameStop and the like of whom make a large amount of their profit off of used games.

And of course you wouldn't see free game giveaways or uber priced games on OCN either!

In the end I think once a person owns a piece of property they should be able to do whatever they want with it. Period. How many people would be pi$$ed if they could no longer give away or sell their movies? Or what if you could no longer rip your new CD's you just bought? I think media giants make enough as it is. If I was in a bind I would feel better knowing I could sell all my movies, games, and cds. It just seems you no longer have the freedom of choice of what you do with that product and you certainly don't have any tangible value for the product.

It may not seem like a big deal now, but imagine if everyone adopted this method of thinking about your media products? It only grows in the gaming industry and the future (be it a decade from now or who knows when) is digital distribution for the majority of games sales. I would be less agitated if they were to lower the prices, but they typically don't. There is no middle man for the product, no shipping costs, and much like Amazon or eBay this method makes more money.

Just my thoughts speaking aloud.

only with valve games and a few other certain games, you can add them to your steam client but im sure you still need the disc in

Atleast when a single PC component accidentally itself, you can replace that one part and be back up...:\\

Bitemarks: If you buy the game from Steam, no matter who actually made it, you need no physical media. Also, due to Valve making steam, every Valve game you buy doesn't require any physical media. You don't need the stinkin' disc for L4D. It's nice to have, but you don't need it to play. I have no actual L4D disc, but I play L4D all the time, and my copy is purchased through Steam.

If you add a shortcut to a non-steam game to Steam, however, any previous DRM restrictions(Such as disc check) are still in place. For example, if I bought GTA SA on DVD, then launched it through Steam, I would need the DVD in to play. If I bought it over Steam, I wouldn't.
