Lapping TRUE black edition and Q6600.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I plan on lapping this when it comes in. I've watched youtube videos on lapping and took some few notes and bought the supply's that I need. Here is what I got: 220 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit, 800 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit, and 2000 grit, and a 24"x24" glass. Any tips? what I know so far is that you don't put any pressure on the CPU or heatsink when lapping; what I don't know is that how much time should I spend on doing this?

depends on how bad the heatsink is in terms of flatness...you might have a lot to shave down....

but for me took about 1-2 hours. I never really paid attention. Just take your time and be patient you only have to do it once. I did it while watching a movie.

U might need more time and extra sandpaper when lapping the TRUE. Took me about 5 hours to lap it. When lapping ur CPU, leave the pin protect on, so the dirt won't touch the pins.

Yeah its best to start with like 220 or 320 to get it started. I have never spent more than 35 to 45 minutes lapping one. I always start with 220, then go to 320 then 400 then 600. I never go past 600, no reason to at all. You can kep going to get a mirrior shine if you like, bu its not needed after 600.

So lazy, you could have made your own...Just cover some cardboard in glue and scatter some sand from the lawn on it. Then you got like number 6 grit sandpaper..

I herd that starting from a lower grit like 220 will be hard, then the rest of the grit will be easy. But what were your guys rotations on the heatsink and CPU? I was think of doing this same pattern 1 set of 20 on each 90 degree turn

I do 90 degree turn between grits after the 220. So 220 then turn, 320 turn, so on...Then keep going till you see the previous marks in the other direction disappear.
